‘I come to respect the rights of all loyal citizens’

Some might find it interesting that I came across this little tale from American history while reading just before sunrise today:

In early September 1861, Kentucky still hung on to its neutrality . …

On the morning of September 5, Grant received a spy […who…] informed him that Confederate general Gideon Pillow had broken Kentucky’s neutrality by marching into Hickman, Kentucky […and…] intended to continue overland to Paducah…

… Nearing Paduch, [Grant] ordered the boats to anchor for a few hours, waiting to arrive by the sun’s early light. As they went ashore, he saw secession flags flying in the breeze, a welcome for Confederate troops expected soon.

“I never after saw such consternation depicted on the faces of the people,” Recalled Grant. [The people] had been expecting the four thousand Confederate troops, by now only ten to fifteen miles away. Instead, they found blue uniforms.

Before leaving, Grant wrote out a short proclamation to the Paducah citizens that began, “I have come among you, not as an enemy, but as your friend and fellow-citizen, not to injure or annoy you, but to respect the rights of all loyal citizens.” He concluded, “Whenever it is manifest that you are able to defend yourselves, to maintain the authority of your Government and protect the rights of all its loyal citizens, I shall withdraw the forces under my command from your city.” … – Pages 160-161 in American Ulysses by Ronald C. I’m not exactly sure why that jumped out at me and sticks with me this many hours later:

‘Full Force’: Trump Drops the Hammer on Portland Anti-ICE Radicals in Announcement on Troop Deployment

“At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists,”

Report: Portland Democrat ‘Leaders’ Set to Go Full Useful Idiots Over Trump’s Troop Announcement

…Democrat so-called “leaders” in Portland have, with rare exceptions, tended to side more often with the purported “peaceful protesters” who routinely wreak havoc on the city than the peaceful, law-abiding citizens who didn’t vote for wokeness and chaos and who just want to be left alone to live and work in peace. …

While it is indeed a Democrat-run city where a majority of voters “voted for this,” many voters there didn’t.

New: Bad Night for Antifa in Portland As Feds Move In

…a federal presence was already visible Friday night ahead of Trump’s official announcement…sure enough, as the Antifa thuggery got underway Saturday night, they were met not just with a response via air but also on the ground…

The key is in that middle link above…many voters (i.e., citizens) did not vote for this lawless chaos and destruction in their city and the disruption to their life, liberty, and property (i.e., pursuit of happiness). Those who did vote for it and who operate under the cover of spineless/brainless city management – none dare call it leadership – give no indication to being faithful to the Constitutional Republic and American Liberty. The loyal citizens of the area deserve to have their rights protected…and it is about time a greater authority came ashore with a little high tech / high power persuasion to do the job.
